Taking an active role in employee career development is instrumental for keeping staff engaged, growing their skills and increasing the chances of retaining them with the organization. For these reasons, coaching is one of the most powerful activities a people manager can practice with their direct reports.
This course covers the fundamentals of workplace coaching for career development. The development experience provides participants with knowledge and easy-to-apply tools needed to become an even more successful manager than they are today!
Coaching for Career Development is an immersive experience which teaches seasoned and new managers alike, the essential skills required coach their employees on how to gain new knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as how to close any developmental gaps.
This offering employs a combination of learning styles, such as instructor-led facilitation, panel discussions, video critiques, small-group working sessions (where managers practice using new tools) and role-play scenarios based on real organizational scenarios.
Coaching for Career Development helps managers support, not drive, the career development goals for their team members. The workshop provides a group learning experience to help managers:
- Gain a new perspective on career development and their role in it
- Plan how to gain the knowledge they need to coach their team in career development conversations
- Prepare for what they need to do in career development conversations
- Apply strategies for supporting the career growth of people who hold a wide variety of aspirations, strengths, and interests

Be able to identify when it is appropriate to use coaching and when it isn’t
Learn the four steps of the GROW model
Understand how to engage in a great coaching conversation
Know useful coaching questions
Understand how to effectively conclude a coaching conversation
Recognize common coaching challenges
Participants will also discover more about themselves as they learn how to use their developing coaching talents for the greater good of the organization. Utilizing a blend of instruction, demonstration and feedback, the workshop provides brief practice opportunities for new skills learned.
